This year’s Walthamstow Garden Party in Lloyd Park promises to be even better than last year’s. The Friends have been closely involved with planning for the event, and here’s what we’ll be offering on 18 and 19 July:
Tug of war tournament
Get your teams of five together for this fierce and fun event on Saturday 18 July. We’ll brief all the teams at 4pm on the larger of Aveling Fields and from there will pit one team against another until only one is left standing (literally!). We’ll have a range of team categories (men, women, medley, young people, multi-generation – no under 12s please). Register on the day and be in with a chance of winning the Friends’ Tug-of-War Cup.
The Soul Picnic crew return after their success at last year’s Garden Party, on Sunday in the Earthly Paradise tent from 3pm. DJs this year include Dominic Mandrell, Stuart Patterson (The Date/Love Vinyl) and Adrian Spurdon (Musica Noche). Expect to hear everything from soul to funk, electro to boogie, disco house and afrobeat. Fabio Filipe (Pineapple dance) will be on hand with his crew, freestyling amongst the crowd, so come down and duel and spar with the best – dancers of all abilities and ages welcome.
Guided walks around the park
Choose from these three fascinating walks:
- Lloyd Park History Walk. Discover Lloyd Park’s rich heritage with our local history expert – from private gardens and countryside, and the home of William Morris and the Lloyd family, to a Victorian public park. Saturday and Sunday 12.30-1.30pm.
- ‘Beautiful and Useful’ Walk. We say ‘Have nothing in your garden that you do not know to be useful and beautiful!’ Discover Morris’ passions through Lloyd Park’s interpretive garden and learn about beautiful and useful plants. Saturday 2-3pm.
- Morris’ Favourite Plants Walk. Meet some of the plants Morris used most often in his designs, such as rose, lily and iris. Learn some fascinating facts about them, plus how to identify and grow them in your own garden. Sunday 2-3pm.
We’re supporting a skate jam at the skate park over the Garden Party weekend, with free entry. There will be a best trick competition at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, run in a ‘jam’ format (moving round the different sections of the park). You’ll need to register on the day for this – details to be announced soon. All kinds of prizes on offer – thanks to Slam City Skates, Volcom, Dephect, Supreme, Lovenskate, Yesfam! and new local E17 skate shop EggTank Industries (find them in Wood Street market). There will also be a sound system playing groovy tunes all weekend.
Plus we’ll have a Friends of Lloyd Park stall on Artillery Island – come and visit us!
